Every GBP field that moves the needle in 2026
Google Business Profile Optimisation
Google Business Profile optimisation checklist for 2026: category strategy, attributes, photos, posts, Q&A, services, products, messaging. Every field that moves the needle.
The 12-section optimisation checklist
- Primary category. Most specific match. Test in Google Maps to confirm the category exists in your locale.
- Secondary categories. Up to 9. One per distinct service line.
- Business description. 750 characters. Head term once, naturally.
- Service area or address. Pick one model and be consistent.
- Hours. Including holiday hours. Out-of-date hours kill conversion.
- Attributes. Identity attributes (women-owned, veteran-owned), accessibility (wheelchair entrance), service options (curbside pickup). Tick every applicable one.
- Services. List every service with price and description. Massively under-used field.
- Products. Same logic as Services for retail.
- Photos. Upload monthly. Mix of exterior, interior, team, and product or service-in-progress.
- Posts. Weekly. Updates, Offers, Events; each becomes its own mini-SERP card.
- Q&A. Seed with 10 to 20 buyer-relevant questions answered by the business; monitor for new public questions and answer within 24 hours.
- Messaging. Turn on with a 24-hour response SLA or do not turn it on at all.
The two attributes most teams miss
Identity attributes drive a meaningful share of voice in the "businesses owned by..." filter searches. Service options attributes drive conversion on the "near me" intent because Google surfaces them prominently in the local pack card.
Frequently asked questions
How long does GBP optimisation take to show in the local pack?
Field-completion changes typically index within 7 to 14 days. Ranking movement requires sustained activity (weekly posts, monthly photos, review velocity) over 8 to 16 weeks.
Can I edit my GBP from a phone?
Yes via the Google Maps app's Business profile section. The desktop dashboard is faster for bulk edits like Services or Products.
Should I delete old posts?
No. Old posts age out automatically (6 months for most types). Keep publishing fresh ones; do not waste cycles deleting.

Exactly what we needed. Our team was debating the best strategy.
Great question! This is something we see frequently with our clients. The key is consistency rather than a one-time fix.
