Step-by-step guide to filing a Google Maps review removal request: what qualifies under Google's content policy, what does not, and how to escalate if denied.

What qualifies for removal

  • Spam. Posted multiple times, automated, or commercial.
  • Off-topic. Personal grievance unrelated to the customer experience at this location.
  • Conflict of interest. Posted by a competitor, former employee with grudge, or someone paid to post.
  • Hate / harassment. Targets protected characteristics or names individual employees in a defamatory way.
  • Impersonation. Pretends to be from your business or a public figure.

What does NOT qualify

  • Negative reviews that describe a real bad experience truthfully.
  • Reviews you disagree with on factual grounds (those need a public rebuttal, not removal).
  • Reviews from anonymous accounts (anonymity alone is not a violation).

Filing process

  1. Sign in to your GBP dashboard. Reviews tab.
  2. Click the three-dot menu next to the review and choose "Flag as inappropriate."
  3. Pick the closest violation category (spam, off-topic, conflict of interest, etc).
  4. Wait 3 to 7 business days for first decision.
  5. If denied and you have new evidence (screenshots showing reviewer is a competitor, etc), file a "Contact us" escalation with that evidence attached.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a review from a competitor?

Yes if you can show conflict of interest. Screenshots of their LinkedIn or company page identifying them as a competitor employee usually satisfy Google's evidence bar.

How long does removal take?

First decision typically 3 to 7 business days. Escalation adds another 5 to 10 business days. Plan ops on a 2 to 3 week resolution window for contested cases.

Can a lawyer's letter speed this up?

Only for clear defamation or content that violates law (e.g. doxxing). Google's review-removal team responds to policy evidence; legal escalation goes through a separate channel and is much slower.

How long does it typically take to see results?

Great question! This is something we see frequently with our clients. The key is consistency rather than a one-time fix.
