What is Ad Rank?

Ad Rank is Google's auction-time score that decides whether your ad shows, where it shows, and what extensions appear with it. Ad Rank = (max CPC bid x Quality Score) plus expected impact of ad extensions. Higher Ad Rank wins better positions at lower cost.

The Ad Rank formula

Bid x Quality Score is the simple version. The full formula factors in expected CTR, ad relevance, landing page experience, ad format and extensions, contextual signals (time, device, query), and minimum thresholds for the auction to display ads at all.

Ad Rank thresholds

Google sets minimum Ad Rank thresholds dynamically. If your Ad Rank doesn't clear the threshold, your ad doesn't show even if you outbid competitors. Underperforming creative can lock you out of the auction entirely.

How to improve Ad Rank without raising bids

Boost Quality Score (cheap), add and improve extensions (free), tighten ad relevance to query (workflow), and improve landing page experience (one-time cost). Each compounds with bid for stronger position at the same spend.

How Unled Network helps

Managed Campaigns attacks Ad Rank from every angle: Quality Score work, full extension build, intent-aligned ad copy, and landing-page audits. The result is more share of voice for the same media budget.

Frequently asked

Can I see my Ad Rank?

No, but you can see Search Top Impression Share and Search Lost IS (rank) which are proxies.

Do extensions actually move Ad Rank?

Yes. Sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, and prices each contribute when relevant.

Does Ad Rank apply to Performance Max?

PMax uses a different auction model but the underlying signal logic is similar.

How often is Ad Rank recalculated?

Every auction, in real time. Each query is its own auction.
