Glossary entry

What is Quality Score?

Quality Score is Google's 1-to-10 rating of an ad's relevance to its keyword and landing page. It directly multiplies your effective CPC: a 10/10 keyword can bid 50% less than a 5/10 keyword and still win the same auction position. It's the cheapest leverage in Google Ads.

The three components

Expected CTR (will users click your ad), Ad Relevance (does the ad match the keyword), Landing Page Experience (is the destination useful, fast, and on-topic). All three rate as Below Average / Average / Above Average.

How to raise Quality Score

Tighter ad groups (one tight keyword theme per group), keyword in headline, keyword on landing page, fast load time, mobile-friendly, and CTR-improving creative. Most accounts can raise QS by 1 to 3 points in 60 days.

Quality Score and account history

Account-level quality history matters too. Aged accounts with clean spend records see better baseline QS than new accounts with the same campaign. This is why aged accounts outperform fresh ones at launch.

How Unled Network helps

Managed Campaigns runs a Quality Score audit at onboarding, restructures ad groups, and rewrites underperforming ads. Pair with Creative Production for the CTR-lifting work.

Frequently asked

Does Quality Score still matter with Smart Bidding?

Yes. Smart Bidding accounts still pay less per click on high-QS keywords.

How fast can I raise Quality Score?

Visible movement in 2 to 4 weeks of restructured campaigns. Major lifts in 60 days.

Is QS visible at the campaign level?

No, only at the keyword level. Campaign-level QS does not exist as a single number.

Does landing page speed affect Quality Score?

Yes. Slow pages bring Landing Page Experience down to Below Average regardless of relevance.

High Quality Scores directly enhance ad visibility and attract more clicks, leading to improved overall campaign success compared to lower scores that can hinder performance.

Practical implementation

To improve your Quality Score, start by structuring tight ad groups with one focused keyword theme per group. Next, ensure your ad copy is highly relevant to the keywords, and consider running A/B tests. Additionally, optimize your landing page for speed, relevance, and user experience, ensuring it resonates with what users expect when they click your ad. Regularly refine and analyze all elements to maintain high relevance and efficiency.

Key takeaways for 2026

As digital advertising continues to evolve, achieving a high Quality Score will remain critical to maximizing ad effectiveness. Focus on enhancing relevance between keywords, ads, and landing pages to not only cut costs but also improve ROI and overall campaign performance.
