Glossary entry
What is a Cloaker?
A cloaker is a server-side filter that shows ad reviewers and bots a compliant 'safe page' while routing real users to the actual offer. Used legitimately, cloakers protect creative IP from competitor scrapers. Used aggressively, they violate ad platform terms and trigger permanent bans.
How cloaking works
Inbound traffic is fingerprinted (IP, ASN, user agent, referrer, fingerprint cookies). Bot or reviewer traffic is served a sanitized version of the page. Verified human traffic from the targeted geography is routed to the real funnel.
Legitimate vs. abusive cloaking
Legitimate: hiding offer details from competitor scrapers, A/B routing, geo-redirect to localized pages. Abusive: showing a 'safe' product page to Google reviewers and a banned-vertical page to users. The second class violates every major ad platform's terms.
Why advertisers care about the topic
Even brands that never cloak need to understand the technique because competitors and affiliates often do, and platform algorithms have improved at catching it. Compliance teams must monitor landing-page behavior to avoid being lumped in with violators.
How Unled Network helps
We do not provide or recommend cloaking for policy-violating use. We do help advertisers with compliant geo-routing, A/B testing, and competitor-defense through our Managed Campaigns team. For genuinely restricted verticals, we use industry-specific compliant funnels instead.

Frequently asked
Is cloaking against Google's terms?
Showing different content to Google than to users is explicitly forbidden and will result in permanent account ban.
Can I cloak based on geography?
Geo-routing to localized landing pages is permitted. Geo-routing to disguise content from reviewers is not.
How does Google detect cloakers?
Reviewer crawls from residential IPs, browser fingerprints that match real Chrome installs, and human spot-checks all defeat naive cloakers.
What's the safe alternative for restricted verticals?
Use a genuine partner program, agency-tier accounts, and compliance-reviewed creatives. We provide all three for iGaming, crypto, and other regulated verticals.

How a Cloaker? compares
| Factor | Option A | Option B |
|---|---|---|
| Cloaking Benefits | Protects IP | Can lead to bans |
Cloaking can serve as an essential tool for protecting marketing assets - however, understanding the right balance is critical to avoid severe penalties from platforms.
Practical implementation
To implement a cloaker effectively, first ensure your server can differentiate between user types. Set up filters to identify potential bots and ad reviewers using methods such as IP tracking and user agent analysis. Next, create separate landing pages - one for compliant viewing and another for real users. Test frequently to stay aligned with platform policies and adapt as necessary.
Key takeaways for 2026
As digital advertising evolves, understanding the implications of using a cloaker will be crucial. Brands must ensure that while they protect their creative assets, they do not cross ethical boundaries - this balance will dictate long-term success in ad strategies.
