How Facebook Quality Rank, Engagement Rank and Conversion Rank Actually Work
Meta phased out the old Relevance Score back in 2019, swapping it for three distinct diagnostic metrics instead: Quality Ranking, Engagement Rate Ranking, and Conversion Rate Ranking. Each shows as Below Average, Average, or Above Average, and provides insight into why your ads succeed or fall short. Yet most media buyers either misinterpret these signals or don't pay them any attention whatsoever.
Breaking Down the Three Rankings
Quality Ranking
Where your ad's quality stands next to competing ads chasing the same audience. Negative user actions (hiding ads, reporting them, blocking the advertiser) and post-click metrics like landing-page bounce dominate this score. A Below Average result typically points to creative fatigue, deceptive imagery, or a dodgy landing page experience.
Engagement Rate Ranking
Where your predicted engagement (clicks, reactions, shares, comments, video views) sits relative to rival ads in the same audience. Below Average usually signals creative that's not cutting through the feed, a weak hook, sluggish video opening seconds, or a mismatch between format and audience type.
Conversion Rate Ranking
How your projected conversion rate (matched to your campaign objective) compares with other ads fighting for the same audience. Below Average tells you the audience, creative, and offer aren't working in concert somewhere along the path from impression to actual conversion.
When These Diagnostics Show Up
- Locate them in Ads Manager, navigate to your column set, select Customize Columns, then tick the three Ranking metrics.
- Always review at the ad level, not at ad set or campaign level.
- Review them every week, as rankings shift continuously across the most recent 7-day period.
- When two rankings read Average and one reads Below Average, address the Below Average metric first. Stacking Below Average ratings multiplies the damage.
Addressing Below Average Quality Ranking
- Review negative feedback patterns. Examine the Delivery Insights section for that ad and check your hide-ad and report-ad percentages. Ads showing a hide rate above 0.1% are draining quality points.
- Ditch misleading creative. Deceptive thumbnails, counterfeit play buttons, bogus error screens, and over-the-top claims attract the harshest quality sanctions.
- Set a frequency limit. When frequency exceeds 4-5 impressions within a week, Quality Ranking almost invariably drops. Implement a frequency cap or refresh your creative.
- Keep your landing page aligned with your ad message. When an ad promotes outcome A but your landing page highlights outcome B, post-click performance deteriorates rapidly.
Addressing Low Engagement Rate Ranking
- Perfect the opening 3 seconds. Three quarters of your video's engagement potential emerges in those first 3 seconds. Begin with a visual jolt, dynamic movement, or striking text overlay.
- Stick to platform-native aspect ratios. Use 9:16 for Stories and Reels, 1:1 or 4:5 for Feed placements. Traditional 16:9 video with black bars performs poorly.
- Experiment with on-screen text. Most Feed videos play soundlessly. Text overlays and captions measurably boost viewer engagement.
- Remove underperforming placements. Review your placement breakdown; if Audience Network or Right Column is dragging down results, switch them off.
Addressing Low Conversion Rate Ranking
- Identify where users drop out. Clicks may be strong but checkout abandonment is high. Use Events Manager to pinpoint exactly where prospects fall away.
- Tailor your audience to your offer stage. Fresh audiences need comprehensive education; existing and retargeted customers want quick transaction offers. Misalignment destroys Conversion Rate Ranking.
- Speed up your mobile checkout process. Slow loading over 3 seconds cuts mobile conversions in half. Compress images, delay non-critical code, and employ lazy loading.
- Switch to placements with greater purchase intent. For transactional campaigns, Feed typically outperforms Reels and Stories. Reweight your placement strategy accordingly.
When All Three Metrics Fall Behind
An ad flagged Below Average across all three rankings is beyond repair. Start over with fresh creative and a new messaging angle, keeping your audience unchanged but rethinking everything else.
- Patching a badly underperforming ad won't work. The algorithm has already deprioritised it; fixing individual elements won't shake off its poor history.
- Disable the ad, shelve the original asset, and publish a completely new ad in a fresh ad set to fully reset audience signals.
- Keep records of which creative approaches consistently achieve Above Average status. That's your repeatable, scalable approach.
These three diagnostics remain overlooked by most Meta Ads Manager users. Advertisers focus on CPM and CPA without checking rankings, yet rankings determine performance metrics. Enable these columns now and review them every week.
