How to Unstick a Bitcoin Transaction in 2026: RBF, CPFP and Accelerators

When Bitcoin transactions get stuck, it's usually because the fee you set is too low for current network conditions. This guide walks through how to sort them out using methods like Replace-by-Fee (RBF), Child-Pays-for-Parent (CPFP), transaction accelerators, or simply waiting, plus tips on sidestepping the problem altogether by keeping an eye on mempool behaviour and fee rates. Use Unled's free Bitcoin Transaction Accelerator to get a read on your transaction and find the best way forward.

Why Bitcoin Transactions Get Stuck

Bitcoin transactions can end up marooned in the mempool, the network's holding pen for unconfirmed transactions, when the fee rate (quoted in satoshis per virtual byte, or sat/vB) is set too low. During busy periods, miners go after the transactions with the fattest fees, leaving those with skimpy fees languishing unconfirmed. A transaction can linger in the mempool for as long as 14 days before it gets kicked out.

Common causes of stuck transactions include misjudging the fee rate, sudden surges in network traffic, or using an outdated wallet that doesn't dynamically adjust fees. Getting your head around these factors is the first step towards sorting things out.

How to Check Your Transaction's Status

Before you try any fixes, confirm the state of your transaction. Head to a block explorer to check its fee rate, size, and where it sits in the mempool. If the fee rate is noticeably lower than the current recommended rate (most block explorers show this), it's a safe bet your transaction is stuck.

You can also use Unled's free Bitcoin Transaction Accelerator tool to work out what's going on with your transaction and explore possible solutions.

How to Fix a Stuck Bitcoin Transaction

1. Wait It Out

If the mempool clears or network activity dies down, your transaction might eventually go through. This is the simplest option but could take hours or even days. Keep an eye on the mempool with available tools to judge whether waiting is a realistic option.

2. Use Replace-by-Fee (RBF)

RBF lets you swap a stuck transaction for a new one carrying a higher fee. But this only works if your original transaction flagged RBF when it was created. If it did, you can use your wallet's RBF feature to put in a replacement transaction with a higher fee rate.

Steps:

1. Open your wallet and find the stuck transaction.

2. Pick the option to replace it with a higher fee.

3. Confirm the new transaction.

Not every wallet supports RBF, so check your wallet's documentation first.

3. Use Child-Pays-for-Parent (CPFP)

CPFP means creating a fresh transaction that spends an unconfirmed output from the stuck one. By putting a high fee on the new transaction, you give miners an incentive to confirm both at once.

Steps:

1. Send a small amount of Bitcoin from the same wallet to another address.

2. Attach a high fee to this new transaction.

3. Wait for miners to confirm both transactions.

This approach works even if the original transaction didn't indicate RBF.

4. Use a Transaction Accelerator

Transaction accelerators resend your transaction to mining pools, making it more visible and improving the odds of it being confirmed. Some accelerators are free, others charge a fee. Unled provides a free Bitcoin Transaction Accelerator tool to help move stuck transactions along.

Steps:

1. Enter your transaction ID into the accelerator tool.

2. Follow the instructions to submit your transaction.

3. Wait for confirmation.

Accelerators are especially handy when the network is heavily congested.

How to Avoid Stuck Transactions in the Future

Monitor Fee Rates

Always check the current recommended fee rate before sending Bitcoin. A number of tools give real-time fee estimates based on network demand.

Use Dynamic Fee Wallets

Pick wallets that automatically adjust fees depending on network conditions. Plenty of modern wallets include this feature.

Signal RBF

Turn on RBF in your wallet settings so you can replace transactions with higher fees if you need to.

Batch Transactions

Bundle several payments into a single transaction to lower fees and reduce the chance of it getting stuck.

What would you say is the single most common mistake people make when they first try this? Asking because we're about to roll it out.

Diego Fernandez Author27 May 2026

The most common mistake we see is skipping the audit step and jumping straight to execution. Nine times out of ten the 'new' problem someone brings us traces back to a foundation issue this checklist would have caught. Run the boring steps first.

Curious how this interacts with tracking restrictions in the EU, anything specific we should watch for on the compliance side?

Diego Fernandez Author17 Jun 2026

Compliance-wise you're right to ask, Amelia, for EU traffic make sure consent mode is configured before you scale anything here, otherwise your measurement will drift and you'll optimize against noise. We covered the setup in a separate guide on the blog.
