What is an Attribution Window?
The attribution window is the time period after an ad interaction during which a conversion still gets credited to that ad. Default windows vary by platform - Meta is 7 days click + 1 day view, Google is 30 days click. Choosing the right window is the difference between honest measurement and self-deception.
Click-through vs. view-through
Click-through (CTC) credits a click that led to conversion. View-through (VTC) credits an impression that didn't get clicked but converted later. VTC is generous and inflates reported ROAS - apply it cautiously.
Why default windows mislead
A long click window (30+ days) credits ads for conversions that would have happened anyway. A short window (1 day) under-credits longer buying cycles. Match the window to your real sales cycle, not the platform default.
Cross-platform attribution
If a user clicks Google, then Meta, then converts, both platforms claim credit in their own dashboards. Use a third-party MMP, GA4 attribution, or your CRM as the source of truth.

Frequently asked
What's the right click window for ecommerce?
7 days for impulse purchases, 14 days for considered purchases. 30 days inflates.
Should I use view-through attribution?
Sparingly. Useful for upper-funnel assessment, dangerous for performance bidding.
Did iOS 14 change attribution windows?
Yes - Meta capped to 7d click + 1d view by default. Conversion API extends this for server-side conversions.
How is GA4 attribution different?
GA4 uses data-driven attribution by default, distributing credit across touchpoints rather than last-click.
