Everything You Need to Know About Google Ads API v20: Key Features

Google Ads API v20 is the first version to ship first-party AI Max controls, native asset library writes and the new search term insights endpoint, while finally retiring some legacy services that have been deprecated for two years. If you operate at scale, the v20 migration is not optional. The deprecated v17 and earlier endpoints stop returning data on the published sunset dates.

What's New in v20

The headline additions are SearchTermInsightService, AssetLibraryService write methods, AiMaxAdGroupService and an expanded RecommendationService that now exposes recommendations programmatically that previously only appeared in the UI. Also new are richer experiment metadata fields and a dedicated ConversionActionService.upload_offline_conversions v2 method that supports the new identifier formats.

Deprecations You Must Handle

The legacy AdGroupAdAssetView, the original Customer Match upload methods using plain email strings, and the v17 reporting fields for keyword bid simulators are all retired. Code that still references them will return an error in v20. The migration is mechanical but tedious. Plan a working week per medium-sized integration.

AI Max Controls

AiMaxAdGroupService finally exposes campaign-level toggles for the AI Max behaviours that used to be UI only. You can set asset opt-in level, brand exclusion lists, geo exclusion overrides and conversion window overrides per ad group. This makes AI Max usable inside enterprise stacks that need budget guard rails.

Asset Library Writes

AssetLibraryService now supports programmatic upload, tagging and asset reuse across multiple campaigns. Combined with AssetGroupService this lets you provision Performance MaxGoogle Ads campaign type that auto-allocates budget across Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, and Maps using machine learning.Learn more in glossary → campaigns end to end from your own DAM. The uploaded assets respect the same content review queue as UI uploads, so the asset is not immediately serving on creation.

Migration Path from v19 and Earlier

Google guarantees a 14-month sunset window per major version. v17 sunsets in 2026, v18 in 2026 Q4, v19 in 2027. The supported migration path is v17 to v20 directly, not v17 to v18 to v19 to v20. If you skip versions you have to retest every endpoint individually. We recommend a migration sprint per major version every 12 months, not a marathon every 4 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long until Google Ads API v20 starts producing measurable results?

The first measurable signal lands inside seven days when the work is engineered, not improvised. Material lift is consistently visible inside 30 to 60 days. Anyone who promises overnight results is selling vapour or playing with attribution windows.

What does Unled Network deliver differently on Google Ads API v20?

We treat Google Ads API v20 as one operating system, not a checklist. That means a single owner across creative, media, infrastructure and reporting, with a Telegram and WhatsApp response window inside 24 hours, and 100 percent locale parity across our 18 supported markets.

Is Google Ads API v20 risky for my account or domain reputation?

Risk only shows up when the work is sloppy. We pre-flight every campaign and every page against the relevant policy clause and platform rule. The only meaningful exposure left is platform-side instability, which we insulate against with a continuity plan and an aged MCCManager Account. A Google Ads umbrella that lets you create and run unlimited sub-accounts under one billing relationship.Learn more in glossary → ready to absorb spend.

Can Google Ads API v20 work alongside my existing agency or in-house team?

Yes. We deliberately staff for hand-off. We document every change, ship a shared dashboard, and operate as either the owner of the channel or the technical layer behind your existing team. The model is decided in week one and never renegotiated mid-sprint.

Great article. Any case studies showing ROI?

Great question! This is something we see frequently with our clients. The key is consistency rather than a one-time fix.
