What is a PBN (Private Blog Network)?
A PBN (Private Blog Network) is a network of websites built or acquired solely to link to a money site, manipulating Google's link-based ranking signals. PBNs were powerful in the 2010s. Today they're explicitly against Google's Spam Policies and risk severe penalties.
How PBNs work
Operator buys expired domains with existing backlink authority, rebuilds them as 'genuine' blogs, then publishes content with links to the money site. The borrowed authority flows through the links.
Why PBNs are now risky
Google's link spam algorithm (SpamBrain) is specifically trained on PBN footprints: shared hosting, similar content patterns, low organic traffic, mass commercial linking. Detection is now reliable.
PBN vs. legitimate link building
Legitimate: digital PR, guest posts on relevant sites, broken-link building, original research that earns links. Each takes longer but compounds. PBNs offer fast lift, then crash.

Can I recover from a PBN penalty?
Yes - disavow all PBN links, file reconsideration. Recovery takes 3 to 12 months.
What's the safer alternative?
Digital PR, original research, guest content on real sites. We ship all three.
